Belinda Leads the Way... Again!

Tuesday, July 30, 2024

On Sunday night, the people of Venezuela were denied a free and fair presidential election by the Maduro regime. This travesty serves as a solemn reminder of the importance of safeguarding our democratic processes.

Interestingly, a recent news report (click here to read) revealed that Elections Canada has suggested changes to protect the political nomination process, including requiring parties to publish fuller voting results (such as number of ballots cast and vote distribution) and explicitly outlawing practices such as voting more than once.

Our Party's co-founder, Belinda Karahalios, foresaw the need for these reforms years ago when she first went to Queen’s Park as a principled conservative and discovered there was no law against voter fraud in internal party elections.

So, in 2019, she introduced a solution: Bill 150 - The Ensuring Transparency and Integrity in Political Party Elections Act, to stop voter fraud in political parties.

Belinda's Bill 150 proposed 3 measures to clean up the system:

1.  Within 7 days after an election for a party leader, president, or candidate, a report must be filed with Elections Ontario setting out the number of persons who were eligible to vote in the election, the number of persons who voted, and the number of votes that each candidate received;

2.  Teeth under the law when someone engages in voting irregularities. Bill 150 would apply the same consequences (fines or jail time) that exist for undemocratic actions in general elections to internal party elections; and

3.  Bill 150 would permit a candidate to contest the validity of an internal party election by commencing an action in the Superior Court of Justice.

Bill 150 would ensure that political parties in Ontario still run their own internal elections with transparency requirements and consequences set out as permanent solutions to deter undemocratic behaviour.

The Elections Officer of Ontario did not promote Bill 150.

And at first, the Ford PC government publicly opposed Bill 150.

Then, PC government house leader Paul Calandra stated that he wanted the bill amended to allow parties to "opt out" of the consequences for vote rigging, because "political parties get to run themselves."

Ultimately, the Ford PC government killed Bill 150.

And yet, years later, Belinda’s visionary idea is officially the policy of the federal Chief Electoral Office. This recognition underscores the innovative leadership of the New Blue Party.

This is yet another example of how the New Blue is ahead of the curve in promoting essential reforms and protecting the integrity of our democratic processes.

We are committed to ensuring that voter fraud has no place in Ontario and Canada. And with more and more groups following the New Blue Party's lead, we continue to lead in challenging the establishment, balancing the narrative, and changing the course.
