Ford PCs Virtue-Signal & Ignore Doctor Shortage

Thursday, August 8, 2024

The Ontario PC government has just announced a new three-year agreement with Shoppers Drug Mart to provide taxpayer funding for more than 23 million menstrual products and 1,300 dispensers in schools.

This initiative expands on the Ford PCs' 2021 pledge, and raises an important question: Is this where our priorities should lie?

At a time when Ontario is facing a critical shortage of doctors and healthcare professionals, we must ask why the Ford PCs are choosing to spend millions on these types of initiatives rather than addressing urgent needs.

Recent data from the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) reveals that Ontario now needs an additional 26,000 registered nurses just to match the RN-to-population ratio of the rest of Canada. For nine consecutive years, Ontario has held the lowest RN-to-population ratio in the country—six of those years under the rule of the Ford PCs.

Meanwhile, the Ontario College of Family Physicians warns that by 2026, one in four Ontarians will be without a family doctor.

These shortages are leaving many Ontarians without the essential medical care they need, leading to longer wait times, increased pressure on emergency rooms, and overall declining health outcomes.

Instead of addressing this crisis, the Ford PC government continues to misplace its focus, spending millions on virtue-signalling initiatives that the Ontario NDP were advocating for a few short years ago.

It’s time for a government that has its priorities straight.

While the Ford PCs are busy propping up projects originally championed by the Ontario Liberals and NDP, the New Blue Party is committed to putting the urgent needs of Ontarians first and defending the taxpayer. As our Party's Founding Constitution says:

"Government works best when there is a clear division of powers and when it avoids intruding on those functions better served by individuals, families, voluntary associations, religious groups, local governments, and the private sector."

With your help, we will hold the PCs, Liberals, and NDP to account for their leftward drift. And we will continue to change the political discourse and the narrative.
