He's No Rob Ford.

Tuesday, October 22, 2024

As we look to the future of Ontario, it's important to remember those who shaped our province's past. The late Rob Ford, former mayor of Toronto, was a man who faced his share of personal struggles, but one thing remained constant: his dedication to conservative principles in governance.

Rob stood firm on the values of small government, lower taxes, and fiscal responsibility. He understood the harm caused by overtaxation and government overreach, and fought tirelessly to cut waste and taxes for his constituents.

In sharp contrast, Doug Ford, despite his promises, has strayed far from these values. Since coming to power in 2018, the Doug Ford PCs have not only failed to provide the relief that Ontarians desperately need — they have brought about more debt, higher costs, and broken promises.

Let’s look at the facts:

No Tax Cuts for Ontarians: The Doug Ford PCs campaigned on helping Ontario families by cutting taxes, but in the years since taking office in 2018, they haven't delivered a single meaningful tax cut. Ontarians continue to shoulder the burden of high taxes while seeing little in return.

Debt Explosion: Since Doug Ford became premier, Ontario's debt has grown by a staggering $132.1 billion. To put that into perspective, Dalton McGuinty added $103.4 billion to the debt over ten years, and Kathleen Wynne added $71.7 billion over five years. Even excluding the $51 billion in COVID-19 spending, Doug Ford has added more debt in a shorter time than McGuinty or Wynne — outpacing both in fiscal irresponsibility.

Two Carbon Taxes: The Doug Ford PCs threw their court case against Justin Trudeau's federal fuel carbon tax by conceding two of the three key legal arguments. Worse still, the PCs then struck a deal with the Trudeau government to impose an industrial carbon tax on Ontario, raising the price of consumer goods. These actions were a direct betrayal of the conservative fight against carbon taxes that Rob Ford would never have tolerated.

Soaring Electricity Bills: Doug Ford's PC government continues to support the costly and inefficient wind turbine "banana republic," which is driving up electricity bills for families and businesses across Ontario.

Rob Ford stood for fiscal conservatism — lowering taxes, cutting waste, and ensuring government worked for the people, not against them. Doug Ford has turned his back on these values, racking up debt and making life more expensive for nearly every Ontarian.

At the New Blue Party, we believe in returning to these core principles. We stand for lower taxes, affordable energy, and a government that works for the people — not for the federal Liberals or special interest groups.
