Recently, it was reported that all proposed future drug injection sites across Ontario have been put on hold, including the one set for my home city of Cambridge.
From 2018 to 2022, I was the only politician fighting against these drug injection sites in Ontario.
As a New Blue MPP, I did all I could to hold the Ford PCs feet to the fire about their support for these harmful sites. Watch me challenge them during Question Period in 2021 by clicking on the image below.
Back then, I didn't have the support of any other federal or provincial politician in this province.
Roman Baber? Randy Hillier? Rick Nicholls? Goldie Ghamari? Maxime Bernier? Derek Sloan? Pierre Poilievre? Any other Conservative Party MP or PC Party of Ontario MPP?
Not one of them lent their support in opposing these harmful facilities.
Last year, Pierre Poilievre finally came out and said something against these sites - seemingly reversing the Conservative Party's prior quiet support. Since then, he's again gone quiet in the face of hostility from the establishment "experts."
And as much as I want to tell you this is another New Blue victory on policy, the truth is, it took an unfortunate tragedy for the Ford PCs to finally change course and agree with my position.
The Ford PCs only finally agreed to delay rolling out more of these deadly facilities after a shooting occurred last year at a drug injection site in Toronto, resulting in an innocent woman losing her life from a stray bullet.
It appears the PCs will be revisiting the future of these drug injection sites soon.
In the meantime, we must keep up the advocacy against these facilities before more lives are lost.
We can't trust what the Ford PCs say on these issues.
They make a habit of fooling Ontarians by promising one thing and doing another.
And sometimes they get away with it aided by PC funded advocacy groups, political operatives, and supposedly "independent media figures" that only tell you about their pro-PC rhetoric but almost always overlook the terrible PC policy decisions.
For example, we all remember back in 2018 while campaigning Doug Ford said he was "dead set against" the drug injection sites.
Then, Jenni Byrne - who was Ford's second in command at the time and is now a corporate lobbyist and Pierre Poilievre's top "strategist" - stepped in to reassure the media that an Ontario PC government was not against all drug injection sites.
Once in power, the Ford PCs went on to fund 21 more drug injection sites than even the McGuinty-Wynne Liberals had funded before them.
The New Blue Party of Ontario is truly the only party in the province that will continue to fight for truth and justice.
