New Blue's Influence. And Another Byelection Called!

Thursday, August 22, 2024

Another byelection has been called by the Ford PC government.

This time it is in the riding of Bay of Quinte.

Do you know anyone who wants to run for the New Blue?

The byelection is called on the heels of the Ford PCs adopting yet another New Blue Party policy position.

On Tuesday, the Ford PCs announced that they will be tabling a bill this autumn that will prohibit drug injection sites within 200 metres of schools and child care centres, and prevent municipalities from opening drug injection sites without the approval of the Ontario PC government.

Unfortunately, the Ford PCs are still refusing to shut down nine drug injection sites across the province that they permitted to open and are currently funding with taxpayer money.

And the Ford PCs have made no commitment to banning all future drug injection sites.

Let's not forget that upon taking power in 2018 — well after the dangers of drug injection sites were established — this same Ontario PC government approved taxpayer funding for 17 such sites across the province.

While the announcement doesn't go far enough, it is still another great New Blue victory!

You may remember, while Belinda Karahalios was a PC MPP, the Ford PCs were privately and publicly hostile to her opposition to drug injection sites and the taxpayer-funded "safe supply" of opioids.

When the Ford government promised to fund dozens of drug injection sites across Ontario, including one in Belinda's own riding of Cambridge — against the will of the vast majority of local residents — Belinda stood her ground and fought back.

The Ford PCs followed this up by going out of their way to take a combative position to Belinda's advocacy — insisting that taxpayer-funded drug injection sites were "saving lives."

As a New Blue MPP, Belinda kept up the advocacy urging the Ford government to reverse course on the introduction of new drug injection sites across Ontario. You can watch one of the exchanges in the legislature by clicking here.

Now, with the New Blue Party gaining momentum and proving to be a threat, the Ford PCs are scrambling to adopt part of our position.

This is another sign of the New Blue's impact — challenging the left, balancing the narrative, and changing the course.

We must keep moving forward and remain vigilant.

We will have to see what the legislation the Ford PCs table actually says, as they have a long history of embedding "poison pills" within their legislation while lying in their press releases.

The New Blue Party is Ontario's only provincial political option committed to conservative principles and to the responsible use of taxpayer money.

With your help, we will continue to force the Ontario PCs away from the far-left policies they wish to impose as part of their alliance with the federal Liberals.
