Ontario PC Deputy Premier Defends Trudeau!
Thursday, February 15, 2024
You may have heard that on January 23rd, the Federal Court ruled that Trudeau's use of the Emergencies Act during the 2022 Freedom Convoy was unjustified. This was great news!
Unsurprisingly, the Trudeau government intends to appeal the decision. When questioned by the media, Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland said that she believes her government did "something necessary and ... legal at the time."
What many media outlets (even some who style themselves "right-of-centre") did not report was that the Ontario PCs also defended Trudeau's use of the Emergencies Act!
Following the federal judge's ruling, Ontario PC Deputy Premier Sylvia Jones (who was appointed by Doug Ford and sat as Solicitor General during the Freedom Convoy) had the unmitigated gall to say that people were "held hostage" by the peaceful protest. Click here to read more.
It's as though Jones forgot that it was her own PC government that imposed the longest lockdowns in North America, mask mandates, and a province-wide COVID-19 vaccine passport system — all shameless political plays that held Ontarians' individual freedoms hostage for months on end.
To this day, Doug Ford and his government refuse to challenge their federal Liberal "friends."
In fact, the Ontario PCs paved the political road for Trudeau in response to the convoy. They did this first by petitioning an Ontario court to freeze the voluntary donations raised for the truckers (over $8 million), and then by declaring a "state of emergency" three full days before Trudeau invoked the Emergencies Act.
It was only after Ford and his PC colleagues framed the Freedom Convoy as a "siege" and "illegal occupation" that the Trudeau government felt comfortable enough to crush the protest.
Deputy Premier Jones rushing to the defence of Trudeau and Freeland was just another example of the Ontario PC Party embracing their role as a new wing of the Trudeau Liberal government.
The New Blue Party was the first to reject draconian COVID-19 policies in Ontario, starting in 2020 with Belinda Karahalios' vote against Ford's Bill 195.
Jim Karahalios was also the first party leader to arrive in Ottawa and show support for the truckers in January 2022. Thanks to the New Blue Party's supplied audio system on that first weekend, the thousands in attendance were able to hear stories from individuals personally impacted by mandates.
It is of the utmost importance that Ontarians have the opportunity to vote for candidates who respect their rights and freedoms, and for a party with a proven track record of the same.
