Who’s Policing the Real Threat to Ontario’s Democracy?
Thursday, October 24, 2024
At the New Blue Party, we’re committed to transparency and accountability in our political system. However, it’s clear that not everyone prioritizes these values to the same extent.
Recently, Ontario’s Chief Electoral Officer has been vocal about wanting more authority to “investigate, thwart and punish misconduct” related to so-called fake news during elections. Yet, when it came to a real opportunity to strengthen Ontario’s democracy — Belinda Karahalios’ Bill 150 — he was silent.
Belinda’s Bill 150 aimed to clean up internal party elections with three clear and simple reforms:
1. Transparency: Requiring political parties to file a report with Elections Ontario within 7 days of an election for party leader, president, or candidate, disclosing the number of eligible voters, the number who voted, and how many votes each candidate received.
2. Accountability: Applying legal consequences — fines or jail time — for voting irregularities in internal party elections, the same as for violations in general elections.
3. Fairness: Allowing candidates to challenge the results of internal party elections in court if they believe the election was not conducted fairly.
Bill 150 would have been a permanent solution to ensure that political parties in Ontario operate with transparency and accountability in their own elections.
Elections Ontario also stayed silent when Doug Ford’s PC government quietly changed the Elections Act, gifting themselves $18 million in taxpayer-funded political welfare just before the 2022 election.
Instead, Elections Ontario seems to be focusing on policing online content.
At the New Blue Party, we know that true democratic reform starts with transparency and accountability where it matters most — at the ballot box, and within the parties themselves.
The fight for integrity in Ontario politics is ongoing, and we can’t do it alone. With your support, we will continue to push for real democratic reform.
