Ford PCs + Lobbyists = Greenbelt Scandal
Recent reports have exposed startling new details about the role of lobbyists in the Greenbelt scandal—and the involvement of senior Ontario PC government officials.
Here’s what we know:
Three more lobbyists have been found to have broken laws in connection with the Greenbelt land removals.
Lobbyists working for mega developers—the same developers poised to benefit from the land removals—were in regular contact with Doug Ford’s political staff before the plan was even made public.
The Information and Privacy Commissioner has orderedformer senior staff members in Ford's office to hand over Greenbelt-related records stored in their personal accounts, raising concerns that decisions were being made outside government channels.
These recent revelations add to a growing pattern of lobbying violations—five violations in less than a year, out of just 11 total published by the Integrity Commissioner in the last nine years.
The Ontario PCs promised reforms to improve lobbying oversight years ago, but (unsurprisingly) never followed through.
The Greenbelt scandal is just another instance of the Ford PCs making secret deals with lobbyists behind closed doors. But lobbyist influence doesn’t stop at the legislature—it also affects internal party politics.
The New Blue Party is committed to cleaning house at Queen’s Park. At our 2024 Policy and Planning Conference, our members passed the following policy:
Policy 2: Ban Lobbyists
The New Blue Party supports legislation that bans lobbyist activity in political party elections and other internal party votes.
