Trump "Breaks" a Weak Doug Ford
Doug Ford has been stirring up fears and escalating tensions around American tariffs.
On Monday, Ford announced a 25% surcharge on electricity exports to Michigan, New York, and Minnesota after gleefully threatening to cut off electricity to U.S. states "with a smile on [his] face."
Maybe he should have read The Art of the Deal.
On Tuesday morning, President Trump responded on social media that he would double tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum from 25% to 50% in retaliation.
Within hours of Trump’s announcement, Ford backed down and suspended the electricity surcharge.
Doug Ford wants us to believe he somehow scored a "win."
In reality, the world is laughing at Ontario.
In an interview later on Tuesday, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick remarked that Trump "came down like thunder" to "break" Doug Ford.
"[Trump] needed to break some guy in Ontario who said he was going to tax American energy ... and breaks him ... by a tweet."

So far, all that Ford has accomplished by playing "Captain Canada" alongside Trudeau and Carney is:
Pulling American alcohol—that we already paid for—off LCBO shelves;
Raising the cost of living for Ontarians by imposing 25% tariffs on nearly $60 billion worth of American goods, including steel, aluminum, clothing, vegetables, and more; and
Promising COVID-levels of government overspending.
No HST or income tax reduction to offset the cost of tariffs.
No relief from the Ford PCs' "Made in Ontario" industrial carbon tax to attract manufacturing back to our province.
No cuts to the red tape restricting small developers and individuals from building the housing Ontario desperately needs.
Doug Ford and the PCs believe that keeping Ontarians burdened by overtaxation is perfectly acceptable—that is why they have been pushing the narrative that tariffs are our most pressing issue.
In truth, backing every move by Justin Trudeau—and now Mark Carney—is just another example of the Ontario PCs' embracing their role as a provincial arm of the federal Liberals.
