Doug Ford’s $259M EV Plan Just Crashed
On Friday, General Motors announced it will halt production of electric vans in Ingersoll, Ontario.
GM has confirmed that the shutdown is not related to tariffs, but rather due to low market demand for EV vans.
The automaker plans to temporarily lay off 1,200 workers, with nearly 500 facing indefinite layoffs when the plant returns to a single shift in October.
This decision comes just two years after Doug Ford’s PC government teamed up with the Trudeau Liberals to spend $259 million in taxpayer money retooling the assembly plant for EV production.
At the time, Doug Ford called the move “the future of auto manufacturing in Ontario.” He promised it would create “thousands of good-paying jobs” and position Ontario as a “North American EV leader.”
Now we’re seeing the results: less than 300 EV vans sold in the last quarter... and 500 layoffs.
That’s not the Ontario PCs’ only risky “green” experiment with taxpayer money in recent months. In January, they promised $100.3 million to Linamar’s “Innovation Driving Green Technology Project.” In February, Linamar’s brand-new, never-used EV gigacasting plant in Welland was quietly put up for sale.
If people were desperate for electric vehicles, the demand would speak for itself — there wouldn’t be a need for taxpayer-funded handouts to keep EV production afloat.
But the Ford PCs have chosen to embrace the Liberal agenda, risking Ontarians’ jobs on a trend that consumers clearly aren’t interested in.
At the New Blue, we believe in making Ontario competitive by lowering taxes and slashing burdensome regulations to attract manufacturing to our province — not funding progressive projects no one wants.
We need responsible leadership that puts Ontario taxpayers, not virtue-signalling, first.
Help us continue to hold the Ford PCs to account as they continue to emulate the Liberals! Chip in today (by clicking here) to support the New Blue Party’s fight for limited government and free enterprise in Ontario.
Together, we will challenge the left, balance the narrative, and change the course!
Thank you so much for your support.
